CJI Chandrachud Highlights
Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud recently highlighted the heightened risks faced by marginalized and disadvantaged groups due to climate change.
Justice Chandrachud emphasized that climate change not only amplifies existing inequalities but also turns it into a human rights issue. He stressed the need for inclusive climate policies that involve affected communities in decision-making processes, ensuring that their unique needs and experiences are addressed. Additionally, the impacts of climate change on indigenous communities are profound. These communities, often residing in ecologically sensitive areas, face severe threats from rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation. Their traditional practices and cultural heritage are at risk, and they experience higher rates of displacement and socio-economic challenges??.
Expectations from the collaborators: They are more likely to be left behind during evacuations and face greater risks of violence, exploitation, and health issues in the aftermath of climate disasters.
Incentives: For people with disabilities, climate change exacerbates existing barriers and discrimination.
