Sustainable Green Projects in Tamil Nadu Districts
Tamil Nadu’s Virudhanagar district has launched a novel campaign ‘Green Drive’, aimed at sustainable greenery development by the convergence of resources from several departments.
The district authorities have also planned to create ponds and sink borewells to facilitate irrigation of planted trees. A total of five locations in the district have been identified with approximately 5-20 acres of barren land, for transformation into green areas. This campaign will involve workers from MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) and use general funds from panchayats. The area would be provided with farm ponds, 500 fodder-giving trees, and hundreds of fruit, timber, and shady trees.
